Mines Action Canada seeks applicants to Youth Leaders Forum

Mines Action Canada is pleased to announce the call for applications for the 2009 Youth Leaders Forum. The Youth Leaders Forum (YLF) will be held 28 November – 5 December in Cartagena , Colombia in conjunction with the Second Review Conference of the Mine Ban Treaty. It is open to women and men 18 – 30 years old who are active in the campaigns to ban landmines and / or cluster munitions.

The 2009 YLF is a component of Mines Action Canada’s Youth Leadership, Education and Action Program (Youth LEAP). The overall goal of Youth LEAP is to increase the capacity of civil society to work for the effective implementation and universalization of the Mine Ban Treaty and Convention on Cluster Munitions. The YLF will contribute to this goal by providing young women and men in key regions of the world with the skills and knowledge to be effective advocates in their countries.

The YLF will include skills building sessions on topics such as lobbying and advocacy strategies, fundraising and grant management, media relations, and volunteer management. The Forum will be focused on action planning. Delegates will work together to develop specific and measurable action steps young campaigners can take in the next two years to advance the goals of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines and Cluster Munition Coalition globally as well as those of national campaigns.

There is a limited amount of funding available for sponsoring YLF delegates, and we expect to have approximately 30 delegates. Youth LEAP graduates (i.e. participants in the 2007 Youth Model Review Conference, 2004 / 2005 International Youth Symposium, Regional Youth Leaders Workshops) are invited to apply and play a facilitation role. Youth who are active locally but who are newer to the international campaign(s) are particularly welcome to apply.

Delegates must:

• be 18 – 30 years old as of 5 December 2009
• have a working ability in English
• be connected to an organization active in the International Campaign to Ban Landmines and / or Cluster Munition Coalition
• expect to have the experience of a lifetime!

To apply, submit the application form (downloads a Word document) to YLF2009@minesactioncanada.org by 4 September. All applicants will be notified by the end of September.
