Sri Lanka Bishops seek resettlement of refugees

The Union of Catholic Asian News reports that Archbishop Oswald Gomis of Colombo, Bishops Kingsley Swampillai of Trincomalee-Batticaloa, Valence Mendis of Chilaw, Cletus Chandrasiri Perera of Ratnapura and Harold Anthony Perera, chairman of the bishops’ commission for justice, peace and human development, Father Damian Fernando, national director of Caritas Sri Lanka, and a group of Christian parliamentarians attended meeting May 11 with Sri Lanka’s President Mahinda Rajapakse, asking him to quickly allow refugees currently residing in camps in the north to return tot heir homes.

Father Fernando said camp conditions are particularly hard on elderly people, who should be released immediately.
